Book Lists

Stories are a transformative way to engage kids in critical conversations about big topics. Books also offer young people “windows,” “mirrors,” and “sliding glass doors”* as they develop their understanding of themselves, each other, and their place in the world.

*The concept of windows, mirrors, & sliding glass doors in children’s literature comes from the work of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop. Watch her explain the concept here.

Mirror books help kids say:

“I matter, I belong, I am valued, I am worthy.”

Window books help kids say:

“You matter, you belong, you are valued, you are worthy.”

Sliding Glass Door books help kids say:

“We can connect and have empathy for each other. Our experiences may differ, but we co-create the world together.”

The Growing Toward Liberation Bookshop storefront contains a wide variety of categorized book lists for kids and young adults featuring diverse authors, characters, and stories. Lists are updated regularly with new releases.
